The Thermic Effect of Death
نویسنده
چکیده
The thermic effect of death as observed on yeast is about 2 gm. calories per gram of dry substance and is therefore very small as compared with the heat produced in most of the exotherm chemical reactions. As the chemical compounds composing living matter have a very great molecular weight, the decomposition of their molecule which brings about death produces more heat than the decomposition of the molecule of some explosive substances. This explains the great instability of the principal compounds of living matter.

Thermic effect of food and sympathetic nervous system activity in humans.
The intake of nutrients is known to increase energy expenditure. Measured thermic effects of nutrient are 0-3% for fat, 5-10% for carbohydrates and 20-30% for proteins. Stimulation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) hydrolysis during intestinal absorption, initial metabolic steps and nutrient storage are responsible for this food thermic effect. The autonomic nervous system modulates the thermic e...
متن کاملThermic effect of food in lean and obese men.
A systemic reappraisal of the thermic effect of food was done in lean and obese males randomly fed mixed meals containing 0, 8, 16, 24, and 32 kcal/kg fat-free mass. Densitometric analysis was used to measure body composition. Preprandial and postprandial energy expenditures were measured by indirect calorimetry. The data show that the thermic effect of food was linearly correlated with caloric...

A defective thermic response to food may be an energy-sparing adaptation in both obesity and pregnancy. To evaluate the combined effect of obesity and pregnancy on postprandial thermogenesis, the thermic effect of food was assessed for a 240 min period following a high-carbohydrate meal and a typical mixed meal in nine normal-weight non-pregnant, eight overweight non-pregnant, eight normal-weig...

متن کاملThe effect of resistance exercise on the thermic effect of food.
PURPOSE The thermic effect of food (TEF) is the increment in energy expenditure above resting metabolic rate associated with the cost of absorption and processing of food for storage. Previous studies have shown that TEF is enhanced by aerobic endurance exercise of sufficient duration and intensity. The purpose of this study was to determine if a similar effect occurs with a single bout of resi...
